Hey all ! I've purchased a few cds in the last few months
that I think folks here would be interested in.I've been
meaning to post this for awhile....but great stuff just kept
comin out ! So this morning..I decided to buckle
down and share some of my favorite new releases with you.

Like some of you, when it comes to Soul / R&B music,
I tend to like the older stuff. The newer artists just seem to
lack the kind of soul, depth and range as some of the veterans
of the genre. That being said, some of the artists I'm going to list
are from the new school. The difference is,these newer cats
know their history and aren't afraid to revisit and also bring
some much needed life back into the genre. As for the older
or more established artist on my list. They bring a history and
richness that very few new artists can bring to the game.
These artists are ' the real deal ! ' No fancy studio tricks to
hide lack of skills or uninspiring beats that are forgettable
after the first listen. Just soul and some low down nasty
funk fo yo rump ! So with that being said, here are a few mini
reviews of some new cds I think some of you will love to hear.

BETTYE LAVETTE - THE SCENE OF THE CRIME
This 35yr + veteran of R&B releases a strong follow up to her 2005 ANTI label debut
" I'VE GOT MY OWN HELL TO RAISE." This underrated songstress has recorded
some of the best material in her career in the recent years. A Muscle Shoals legend,
Bettye teams up with indie country band "Drive By Truckers" to release some of the
most personal and gritty songs of her career. Like her last cd, produced by indie singer/
songwriter Joe Henry, this cd is comprised mostly covers. But don't be fooled into thinking
this is a bad thang! Bettye has taken these songs ripped them to shreds and makes them her
own. Most of the covers she's done bear VERY little resemblance to the original. She puts
some soul and rawness in them that make it seem as if these songs were hers all along.
A stand out track for me is her cover of Elton John's Talking Old Soldier. A song that sounds
eerily like Mrs LaVette hangin at the bar with a younger admirer of her artestry. Love It !!
The Queen is alive and well.....and lucky for us...currently on tour ! Don't sleep on this disc
and get yo butt out there and support a living legend on the road! You won't regret it!

ME'SHELL NDEGE´OCELLO - THE WORLD HAS MADE ME THE MAN OF MY DREAMS

Sporting a title that is nothing less that deep, Ms. Ndegéocello does her magic again
on this her first release on the Emarcy label. ( let's hope it's not her last ! ) This disc has
all the thought provoking funk of her debut "PLANTATION LULLABIES," the genre defying
style of " PEACE BEYOND PASSION" and the laid back funk of "COMFORT WOMAN."
This is Me'shell at her best ! Let's hope Emarcy can promote this artist better that Maverick
was able to. Me'shell is also currently on tour. Bringing her fonky basslines and spiritual
bliss to fans everywhere!
www.freemyheart.com/

SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS - 100 DAYS 100 NIGHTS
Sharon and the Brooklyn based band the Dap-Kings have cooked up another
delicious stew of fonky tracks for this their third disc for Daptone Records.
Like Mrs LaVette Ms Jones is a veteran of this game and it shows, not only
on this album, but on stage as well. Sharon and the boys are from another
time when brothers were " cats" in sharp suits and shades and girls were
teasing their beehive doos and sporting mini's as they shimmied to the soul
of Hitsville USA. On "100 DAYS 100 NIGHTS" Sharon and the boys take
us back to Stax records circa 1968. The result is nothing short of brilliant.
While in my honest opinion, this one isn't as good as their last two discs,
"DAP-DIPPIN WITH SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS and their 2005
breakthrough disc NATURALLY" the gang doesn't stray too far from what
makes them one of the most exciting acts out there today. For those of you
who got caught up with artists like AMY WINEHOUSE, LILY ALLEN, and
MARK RONSON this past year, know that they're sound HEAVILY relies
on the heart and soulstirring rhythm of hte DAP_KINGS who have played on the cds
by all of the artists I've just mentioned!. These cats put on an amazing show and
Ms Jones is deserving of her title of the "Hardest Working Woman In Showbiz!!
Don't take my word for it....pick up this release and catch them on tour now!
www.daptonerecords.com/pages/...on.html

4 HERO - PLAYING WITH THE CHANGES
4 HERO broke onto the scene back in 1998 with their stunning debut
"TWO PAGES." Their debut release helped change the face of the
then growing genre of Drum & Bass by infusing it with a vintage
soul sound harkening back to the days of Curtis Mayfield and Margie
Joseph. The end result was sweet, smooth, deep and fonky as hell !
Since then, the genre has come and gone but 4 HERO continues
to grow and establish themselves as genuine artists. Refusing to succumb
to the quick death that so many in the D&B genre have suffered.
This the follow up to their fourth disc in 2001 entitled " CREATING PATTERNS"
seems to be playing with some of the ideas they created on that disc. ( hence the title )
Most notably the return of Swedish songstress Carina Anderson. Miss Anderson
uncannily, and with great success channels Minnie Ripperton on the opening track
"MORNING CHILD." A definite improvement over her rather uninspiring cover of
Minnie's classic hit "LES FLEURS" on the "CREATING PATTERNS cd.
This disc seriously bumps with tracks like the sexy as hell "TAKE MY TIME" featuring
Miss Jack Davis workin us over with her bedroom voice. Other tracks worthy of mentioning
are " LOOK INSIDE" with strings workin that classic Philly sound! ( one of the things I love
about this band! ), the broken beats of "SINK OR SWIM" will hook you in and make you
beg for more. This is classic 4 HERO at their best. Unfortunately the disc slumps about
halfway through grinding to a staggering halt with the totally awful cover of the Stevie
Wonder hit "SUPERWOMAN" featuring forgettable vocals by Terry Devos.
The problem with some 4 HERO songs such as this one is not only do they wear their i
nfluences on their sleeve, but sometimes they brazenly think they can try on the whole
outfit and have the same effect as the original wearer. Definitely not so!
The disc is later rescued by a hot track by the one and only JODY WATLEY.
Ms Watley co-wrote the uplifting BED OF ROSES on which she
gives one of the best, most inspiring performances of her career! I only hope her
collaboration with 4 HERO goes a little further and produces a little sumpthin, sumpthin
in the way of a new disc for Ms Watley in the future! We can only wish! All in all I give this disc
four stars despite the few complaints I have with a few of the songs, like the one
previously mentioned. It's a new direction in R&B and a welcome one. We can only hope
the rest of the world of R&B will catch a clue and start creating better music than it
has in the last decade. In the words of Canadian soul sista Esthero "WE R IN NEED
OF A MUSICAL REVOLUTION!" Bands like 4 HERO has given us good place to start.
VIVA LA REVOLUTION Y'ALL !

Bay Area legend PARIS weighs in on current events:
( taken from a post @ http://www.guerrillafunk.com/ )

Since the Imus controversy recently erupted there has been a lot of finger-pointing and blame-placing as to what the root of the problem really is. Of course, we all know that racism and sexism existed before hip-hop -- that's a given. But it's completely beside the point when our (black) culture is dictated to us by white corporations. Follow me...

For the record, most folks in our communities didn't even know Don Imus before he made headlines with his slurs (and many still don't). For the most part, we remain oblivious to the tirades of him, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and others who constantly malign us and foster a climate of intolerance simply because these talking heads don't speak to US. For Imus to blame black culture as being the reason for his ignorance is both sad and backwards. He's a racist and a sexist, pure and simple, and he can't blame an art form or a culture that I'm certain he has little knowledge of for his actions. The fact that he named hip-hop "culture" as a culprit is telling, however.

If you haven't noticed by now, life imitates art -- it's not the other way around. There is no stronger cultural influence on people now than popular media, and hip-hop is at the forefront. Ask almost any child about the lyrics to a popular song or a scene from a video or movie and more often then not they will know the details better than they know their school lessons. Entertainers and the culture of celebrity that we find ourselves living in often hold more weight with kids then parents, educators, preachers politicians or even sports heroes. Can we blame some rappers for selling completely out? Of course. Be we have to look at the entire picture.

The argument is often made by Russell Simmons and others that rappers are poets who simply report on what we feel and our surroundings, and that we shouldn't be censored. On that point we partially agree -- we shouldn't be censored. But balance between the negative and positive needs to be provided, and it currently isn't. Most artistic integrity is questionable at best. My understanding is that artists are supposed to express what they believe in at all costs (if not, there's work at the post office). But most don't, and they mold their approaches to making music based on what they perceive major labels wanting. If Def Jam or Interscope or any of these other large culture-defining companies issued a blanket decree that they would only support material and artists with positive messages then 99% of those making music now would switch up to accommodate. That's real talk. I'm not saying these labels should (or would), but if they did, gangstas would stop being ga! ngstas and misogynists would stop being misogynists at the drop of a DIME. Many artists are like children, and most will say and do what is expected of them in order to benefit financially. And although there is definite self-examination that needs to take place within the artist community, the lion's share of the blame falls on the enablers who only empower voices of negativity. Record labels and commercial radio often use the excuse that they are "responding to the streets" and that they are "giving the people what they want." BULLSHIT. They dictate the taste of the streets, and people can't miss what they never knew. The fact is that there are conscious decisions made by the big business and entertainment elite daily about what to present to the masses -- and it is from those choices that we are allowed to decide what we do and do not like. Who presents the music that callers are invited to "make or break" on the radio? That callers are invited to "! vote on" on T.V.? Who decides on what makes it to the store s! helves o r the airwaves at all? Like I said, life imitates art, and pseudo-black culture is determined by those other than us every day. Walk into any rap label or urban radio station and you can count the number of black employees on one hand.

The argument in response could be made in defense of labels that if they don't respond to the streets then the music will just go underground. Huh? WHAT underground? Do you know how much good material is marginalized because it doesn't fit white cooperate America's ideals of acceptability? Independents can't get radio or video play anymore, at least not through commercial outlets, and most listeners don't acknowledge material that they don't see or hear regularly on the radio or on T.V. Very few of us are willing to actually seek out material and messages to identify with. As with anything in our fast food culture, we want our entertainment choices fast and in our collective face. For most listeners, all the rest need not apply.

What I want to know is, when did the worst in us become normal and accepted? When did it become par for the corporate course that "black man as thug" and "black woman as slut" be business as usual? Major companies now line up to profit from the buffoonery of a few...at the expense of us all. MTV, Viacom, Clear Channel, Boost Mobile, Amp mobile, Chevy, all major record labels and most video games come readily to mind, but there are many others.

I'm not a hater...although I do hate the imbalance in the industry right now and the negativity it fosters. I'm not calling for censorship. You can't lump me in with the Jesse Lee Petersons and the Armstrong Williamses of the world...bourgeois self-hating black men who demean other black people and profit at our expense. And nobody can say that I'm unqualified to speak on it, since I've contributed to the sale of just under 4 million albums independently, still run my own successful counter-establishment label (www.guerrillafunk.com) and have been embracing messages of self-esteem and self-sufficiency for years.

Like I said, I'm not calling for censorship, but I am calling for balance. I'm calling for more representation of points of view other than gangsta rap and escapism. More revolutionary voices. More voices of women. Where is the diversity? Music can only be kept artificially young and artificially dumb for so long before an inevitable backlash ensues, and that's what we're seeing take place now. Overall album sales for the January 1-April 2 period are down 16.6% -- with a 20.5% decline in CD album sales since last year -- and an even greater decline in hip-hop. Since LAST YEAR (and it was already raggedy last year, believe me). We're seeing the industry implode before our eyes. I heard somebody say recently that in this current era of style over substance Stevie Wonder, Parliament/Funkadelic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Curtis Mayfield and others would never have been signed. Let tha! t sink in for a second. They would never have been signed. Some of the very architects of black music as we know it would have been sidelined too, just as countless others are now, because they wouldn't have fit into white corporate America's cookie-cutter feel-good box of acceptable black behavior and appearance. Same goes for me, Public Enemy (they'll take the Flav, but not the Chuck), Kam, X-Clan, BDP, Wise Intelligent, dead prez, Zion-I, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Blackalicious, Immortal Technique, The Coup, T-K.A.S.H., Michael Franti and a host of others.

So how many half-naked women sipping Cris draped in blood diamonds poolside will it take before we collectively agree that shit is tired now? How many backward-ass coons with tats and plated grills and pimp cups etc. in the strip club before we all agree that enough is enough and that we need balance? When did the bar get set so low? When will we demand more? And as for Simmons' argument that "rappers are reporting what they see" etc, how are cocaine-kingpin rhymes or poolside pimp-nigga fantasies anyone's reality? Miss me with that bullshit argument. Yes, there should be room for all voices to be heard, but we have to be treated and presented equally. Now we have bitches and hos, players and pimps, gangstas and dealers -- but no kings and queens, no revolutionaries, no dissent, no political commentary and no anger -- how is that? In an era where EVERYTHING is political and people are more disgusted with the way things are more than ever? It's no mistake. Yes! I can say that we have failed, that we have allowed black culture to once again be co-opted, diluted and prostituted. Commercial rap culture is now to hip-hop is what disco was to funk. No wonder Nas is saying it's dead.

And who's to blame? Definitely not artists like the ones mentioned above. Not most artists at all, actually, because we don't control whether or not we're seen and heard by the masses. No, the blame needs to squarely sit on the shoulders of those who run the labels, the commercial radio stations, the television studios and the large corporate sponsors who reward only the worst in us and seem hell-bent on pursuing (with little success) the most fleeting, fickle demographic of all -- 12-16 year old adolescent females. You know, the demo that's the most impressionable, with the least amount of loyalty or disposable income. Brilliant.

Know that it's okay to call shit like it is and quit being cowards worrying about who we'll offend. It's okay to blame Simmons, Lyor Cohen, Jimmy Iovine, Kevin Liles, Bob Johnson, Debra Lee, Michael Martin and others of their ilk because the blood is on their hands. They are the gatekeepers of popular culture and they are the ones who determine what you see and hear. They can't say that their decisions are based on economics when they exclude voices of reason because there are literally hundreds of millions of people globally who feel the same way. What about that consumer base? I guess that money is no good, huh? Fuck outta here... Remember, part of the strategy of mind control is to fool the public into thinking that they have choice. We do, but the playing field is so skewed in the favor of mega-corps that the contributions of the alternatives are often viewed by most as insignificant.

So yes, there is a problem, but the fake "Kumbaya" moment on Oprah recently won't solve it. Are we really going to look to those individuals who have made a killing off of pushing poison to us to fix the problem? We shouldn't. Instead, we should vote with our dollars and continue the campaign of public shame until we see some concrete change. The music industry as we know it is on its death bed. People are now more tired than ever of 'music business as usual' and style over substance.

Imus was an insignificant part of a much greater problem. Sure, his incident open up national discourse regarding issues of race and sex. And yes, it is now more apparent than ever that whites have a hard time acknowledging racist and sexist behavior in other whites as being solely their fault. Most black artists are not to blame, as we often can't been seen or heard without white help. But it's important to note that many of us can and should know better when saying and doing the things we say and do. It's easy to despise the indefensible, and media outlets like Fox News have made good money demonizing those with little real power.

But will we champion the good among us?
Take this, you knuckleheads!

Sharon Jones is NOT going to cry. No sir, she and the Dap-Kings are coming hard and strong as ever. No balladeering for the candle-light crowd this time. The Spirit of The Godfather is alive and sweating in this one. The A-side is a syncopated Funk workout ala 1972 Bobby Byrd, with an intro/bridge figure that will knock your tits off. The B-side is a Grunt-style instrumental of the same theme with The Sugarman tearing the melody mercilessly out of the tenor saxophone as if it owed him money.

If this isn't the toughest funk 45 of the year, we will send you your money back inside a new pair of shoes.
ARTHUR LEE, 1945-2006
Influential musician led rock band Love

By DEAN GOODMAN
Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Arthur Lee, the eccentric singer/guitarist with influential 1960s rock band Love, has died after a battle with leukemia, according to a Web posting by his manager. He was 61.

He died Thursday in a Memphis, Tenn., hospital.

Lee, a Memphis native who referred to himself as "the first so-called black hippie," formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965, emerging from the same scene as groups like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors and the Mamas and Papas.

The first multiracial rock band of the psychedelic era, Love recorded three groundbreaking albums fusing traditional folk rock and blues with symphonic suites and early punk.

Bands as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie and the Banshees cited Love as an influence.

The band's self-titled debut yielded the hit single My Little Red Book, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. The 1967 follow-up, Da Capo, was one of the first rock albums to feature a song, Revelation, that took up an entire side.

A third release, 1968's Forever Changes, which boasted adventurous horn and string arrangements, is considered Love's bold response to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at No. 40 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

But Love, which rarely left Los Angeles, lost momentum as Lee hired new musicians and pursued a solo career. Various reunions amounted to little, and Lee's eccentricities landed him in a California prison for six years during the 1990s for firing a pistol into the air.

After being released in late 2001, Lee assembled a new version of Love and toured Europe and North America, often playing Forever Changes in its entirety.

Earlier this year, Lee was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. In May, facing certain death after three rounds of chemotherapy failed, he became the first adult in Tennessee to undergo a bone-marrow transplant using stem cells from an umbilical cord, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Doctors said the procedure lifted his chances of survival only moderately, the newspaper said.

Several benefit concerts were held in Britain and the United States to help Lee with his medical bills. Former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant headlined a benefit in New York in June.

Taken from the 4ad newsletter:

TV On The Radio's kaleidoscopic and addictive new album Return To
Cookie Mountain is released today.

Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, which came out in 2004 -
established TVOTR as one of the most exciting and genuinely innovative bands to
have emerged from the American musical underground in years. That
record earned them the Shortlist Prize - the US equivalent of the Mercury
Music Prize - and a devoted global fanbase thrilled by the band's
unique sound - a dizzying blend of post-rock, soul, New York new wave and
deep dub.

And if Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes - with its moody textures
and refusenik lyrics - was a monochrome question mark, the follow-up is
an technicolour exclamation mark. Recorded at the band's own Stay Gold
studio in Brooklyn, it's a thrilling sugar-rush - colourful, inventive,
wildly ambitious and genuinely celebratory. It's packed with the kind
of intuitive moves that few other bands could even imagine, never mind
pull off, from the psychedelic, sample-drenched "I Was A Lover", to
the radiant ascent of "Province", to the euphoric break-down and build-up
of the truly feral single-to-be "Wolf Like Me".

Return To Cookie Mountain features a guest appearance from
self-confessed TVOTR fan David Bowie as well as labelmates Kazu Makino (Blonde
Redhead) and Katrina Ford (Celebration), not to mention contributions from
much of Brooklyn's musical community. And the reviews in the UK have
been overwhelmingly positive :

"a delight - an experimental album with a pop heart"
The Guardian (4/5)

"spellbinding ... wonderful"
Observer Music Monthly (4/5)

"evidence of fearless imaginations at play, Cookie Mountain is a
triumph of psychedelic melody, drone and eerie groove"
Mojo (4/5)

"more than deserving of your worshipful attention. Hallelujah !"
Time Out (5/6)

"excellent ... an album full of playful daring"
Q (4/5)

"ceaselessly inventive and tuneful"
The Observer

"underlying it all is a glorious pop sensibility"
Independent On Sunday (4/5)

TV On The Radio will be back in Europe in August, playing at festivals
all over the continent.
Record Collector – February 2006 Issue #320
Last year a cult Finnish group hooked up with a transplanted US singer and decided to record a vintage sounding soul tune. The band has been unceremoniously knocking out grizzly jams on limited 45s for years and this one could have been just another bowstring. However, CD copies of this ‘If This Ain’t Love’ smashed open the Helsinki charts, becoming Finland’s big song of the summer – and when they pressed the vinyl version it exploded onto Britain’s Northern soul scene, selling out instantly. Gilles Peterson even made it one of the year’s best tracks on his Radio 1 show. Their album proves that the venture was no fluke – in ten huge productions they round up every stray vibe a soul LP should boast, from the bustle of Hitsville ‘My Four Leaf Clover’ and ‘Invisible Man’ to the heavy swell of the ballad ‘No Ones Gonna Love You’. Nicole may not have the rangiest pipes but with floor-packing arrangements like these, who’s nitpicking? ****

So while searching the universe for something new in the Afroindie world.
I came across a cd by a local band which caught my attention. The band is
called "Mutilated Mannequins." I had heard one of their songs on the web
and decided to hunt it down. Finally finding a copy at Aquarius Records in
the Mission I ran home with my newly discovered booty to give it a listen. The album is very dark....very politically incorrect and crazy as hell!
So of course....I liked it! The Album is called,"Lordship & Bondage."

M.M is made up of just 3 members. One of which I discovered was an old aquaintance of mine! SHOCK! Anyway, fans of Marilyn Manson or industrial music will like this band. They are little glimmers of glam as well. Lead singer
Lamar sings only in falsetto. But not like that horrid 70's revivalist band The Darkness. More like Tiny Tim on Oxycontin! Plantation Fantasy is a perfect example of what happens if you mix make-up,industrial funk, and a warped
political view. Fun,Fun,Fun! Nigga Spectacle ( Both songs taken from the ep "Justice From The Waist Down.") is just so wrong with it's sing song chorus
( NIGGA,NIGGA,NIGGA!) and hyper sexual lyrics! Not for the faint of heart
or easily offended. But if you can make your way through the strange dark forest that is Mutilated Mannequins you find something completely original and a little fun in that deranged,"how the hell did they get a records deal"
kinda way. Talented? Maybe? Subversive fun? Yes! This is a band that must be seen live to fully appreciate the madness that is Mutilated Mannequins!

ABOUT GILLES PETERSON

The word “DJ” takes on ever broader meaning. At its root, it still boils down to a disk jockey who spins vinyl for a living. But under the DJ rubric are radio DJs, club DJs who beat-match tracks, as well as “turntablists” who scratch. Many DJs are also creators who DJ to supplement their livelihoods and get their tracks out to audiences, while others take on roles as tastemakers, influencing the public through compilations and record labels.

English DJ Gilles Peterson is perhaps the ultimate _expression of the latter style of DJ. From his early days as a club and pirate radio DJ through his more recent incarnations as label boss and BBC radio host, Peterson has shaped tastes through an untiring crusade to spread the side of the dance music spectrum occupied by jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, Latin and house music.

"One of the most important tastemakers in music this decade" according to MIXMAG

"The man, the myth, the legend ... the incredible selections of arguably one of the most influential DJs of our time." - Miles Ahead

ABOUT DWELE

Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. Signed to Virgin on the strength of his songwriting and performance skills, Dwele released Subject in mid-2003 and cemented his appeal with European audiences (he was a favorite on Gilles Peterson's influential Radio 1 program) with a tour that summer. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

"...a storm of jazzy live action out of LA....solid R&B tinged tracks that remind us of the good old days of The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai's first albums and the original Giant Step parties...lots of thick, layered vocals mixed with inner city heat."
Los Angeles-based septet, The Rebirth, offers its long anticipated release, This Journey In, to fans on Kajmere Sound/KSD Music in spring 2005. In this compelling new 11-track album recorded in the band’s hometown, The Rebirth matches its musical vitality with a gift for lucid poetry and songwriting, creating a rich sound built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These elements make the group’s music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers.
CAUTION!! This cd is on the experimental tip. That means no beats...no rhymes...not hook. Just soundscapes of pure blissfull, and sometimes humorous noise.

If you love that deep funky 60's-70's soul music.
Then this is the band for you!
Sharon Jones, a singer who's been around for quite awhile
( a career spanning from the 70's - till now ) , finally finds her groove with the Brooklyn band The Dap-Kings ( made up of members of the afrobeat band Antibalas ). While her new disc "NATURALLY" follows the same funky formula of her last one, ( DIP DIVIN WITH THE DAP-KINGS ) this latest disc never fails to bring the goods. And there's a lot of good on this disc! The opener, a song called "HOW CAN I LET A GOOD MAN DOWN?" sounds like Lyn Collins/James Brown and Fele Kuti all at the same time! Their version of "THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND" brings a funky urban vibe to the folk song of the same name. Arlo Guthrie was never this funky! Sharon's duet with legendary funk crooner Lee Fields intitled "STRANDED IN YOUR LOVE" will make those hot nights with a lover even hotter! "Songs like the JB inspired "YOUR THING IS A DRAG" and the floorshakin "MY MAN IS A MEAN MAN" will have you jumpin out of your seat and on the dancefloor ( or into the streets ) workin up a sweat with a smile a mile wide!

This is one of those rare discs were all of the tracks deliver in full! You'd swear that the disc is from 1969 but it's from 2005 via Brooklyns retro label DAPTONE RECORDS. While other R&B legends are trying to hold on to their original sound yet try to sound modern ( ie the new Solomon Burke.) Sharon and the Boys shamlessly give you something timeless and original without compromising to current trends. Don't sleep on this one! It's a genuine classic!

For those of you in the Bay Area Sharon and the Dap-Kings will be bringing their vintage r&b dance sound to the Elbow Room on May 14th. Here's a review of the band from the Elbow Room web site.

<<New York’s preeminent underground funk and soul outfit is back! Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings’ newest album “Naturally” (Daptone Records) is winning critical acclaim all over and is laced with the powerhouse vocal stylings of Ms.Jones. Her raspy, sultry, dynamic voice is backed by a crack outfit of funk players, (some who also perform with Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Sugarman 3, and Whitfield Brothers). Capturing the authentic late 60’s soul sound both in studio and in live performance, Sharon Jones makes it all come together in one sexy and funky jam that goes from fast paced shuffle to moving soul ballads in just one shake.

Born and raised in James Brown’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia Ms. Jones has been dubbed the “New Queen of Funk” by many of her fans. Like many great soul singers, Ms. Jones started singing at a young age in the church choir and has gone on to record and perform with the Four Tops, Maceo Parker, and The Drifters (to name a few). That pedigree has ceryainly shone through in her style, which can be best compared to the true funky divas of the 70’s – names like Lyn Collins, Vicki Anderson, Carla Thomas, and Camille Yarborough.

The last time Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings took over the Elbo Room, the sold out crowd danced so hard, there was even sweat on the walls! Don’t miss this rare performance as Ms. Jones and her comrades don’t come around as often as they should! >>

I told the sax player (who was wearing this long gold gown with some antenae-halo thing on his head) that he look like he was dressed for sun ra. He told me thats who they based their wardrobe on. Incredibley tight grooves. Quite a show to see. They will be playing in Berkeley on friday april 22. Should be a great show.
KONONO N °1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likemb é(a traditional instrument sometimes called "sanza" or "thumb piano", consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likemb és (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones.

Not really my thing. But I thought I'd pass some info on to those of you into black metal.
( there's a band link at bottom of the page )

Here's what AMG has to say about them:

God Forbid forges the gritting, teeth-baring bile of American death metal together with the melodic overtones of the so-called "New Wave of Swedish Death Metal" promulgated by bands like In Flames, Arch Enemy, and the late, lamented, and legendary At the Gates. Equal parts Pantera, Hatebreed, and early Sepultura, the central New Jersey based band have carved out a name for themselves touring with the formidable likes of Cradle of Filth, Nile, and Candiria, and playing gigs with bands as diverse as Sevendust, Sick of it All, Soul Brains, and Shadows Fall. God Forbid's music cuts a clear, brutal path through metal's inter-genre barriers as swiftly as the band's diverse ethnic makeup cuts across color lines. The men of God Forbid — hulking, imposing vocalist Byron Davis; bassist Beeker; drummer Corey Pierce; and the brotherly guitar team of Doc Coyle and his older sibling Dallas — first emerged with the Out of Misery EP in 1998. Their debut full-length album, Reject the Sickness, followed in 2000 through the small but fierce indie imprint 9 Volt Records. The album received a ton of spins on New Jersey/New York-area metal radio powerhouse WSOU, and eventually garnered the attention of the L.A. offices of Century Media Records, who quickly signed God Forbid to a worldwide deal. The result was 2001's Determination album, a sharp, crisp, and incredibly focused effort showcasing the band's songwriting talents and penchant for diverse musical interplay and technical wizardry. Subsequent touring with some of the biggest acts in metal and hardcore music followed, solidifying God Forbid's position as an up-and-coming contender for a highly regarded position amongst metal's most elite. Even Cradle of Filth vocalist Dani Filth was suitably impressed, reveling in the band's intensity and commenting on it nightly from the stage while touring across the States alongside them. That same year, the Reject the Sickness EP was reissued with extra tracks as the band embarked on tours with Opeth and crossed the pond for sold-out U.K. and European shows.

I was going to post a review of a cd by the rock band The Spades. I found the disc over the weekend at Ameoba.
I had never heard of them before and the disc was very cheap. So I forked over some cash and went home with much enthusiasm to check it out. Well after hearing the first 2 songs I have to say the band sounds tight. But thier lyrics were VERY offensive to me. Songs about girlfriend bashing, gay bashing and just all around hatred for most folks! I thought at first maybe the band was being tongue and cheek. But as the disc went on I soon realised this is their style! Violence is their thang.

I'm all for freedom of expression. Shock value is cheap but can be fun sometimes. But can an artist take it too far?
